Innovation Day 2016
Creatives at work—and why sometimes things blow up…
At Schindler we get together every day, which only makes sense since together we work on solutions that make the world smarter for our partners and their clients. But once a year, we take the time to fine-tune our own ability to innovate. As a team, as the Schindler family, as thought leaders, and as a creative team.
From the city to the mountains—a good step to clear the mind, breathe fresh air, and develop new perspectives. To reflect, to generate and to build our team. Of course, that last is a well-worn phrase, no question. But it is still an important part for us because the Schindler team has grown to over forty employees in the last ten years. We think that’s pretty impressive if you consider that we started with only one. In any case, reason enough to come together in a large group—this time in the cozy surroundings of the Millrütter cottage here at Vorarlberg.
Our innovation day started out comfortably, but soon we were going all out. Founder Dominic Schindler took matters into his own hands and reviewed the past year. His visions, missions, and plans concluded the introduction to an action-packed day. Why action? Because later on, there would be a big bang and we would bring the house down in typical Schindler fashion!
Earlier on, Philipp, our service design specialist, talked about the future of service design. But more than that, he also talked about why this discipline is here to stay, which companies are particularly successful at it (and which aren’t!), what language, thinking and methods we use, and what the process is like for developing innovative services and products. That our approach is always customer-oriented but the path is interdisciplinary. And, of course about our goal for service design: To create unique customer experiences and market-driven services. Important buzzwords for us: user-centered, co-creation, sequencing, evidencing, and holistic. In short: services are everywhere nowadays. At Schindler, we create smart services as an alternative to pure product marketing.
All right, now on to the next main event of the day, the big bang. Because at Schindler, we like to let others do the work sometimes, we had a team-building coach come up to our house – um sorry, cottage. Not that we can’t entertain ourselves, but we always welcome input from the outside. The task itself was negligible… it’s the result that counts! And we really made some smoke… Here’s the video.
So, what else did we do? Well we had a damn good time together. Talked about us as a company, our changes and challenges. About innovation, about design, about the latest developments, about our goals, and of course about the “why.”
The bottom line: It was a day full of excitement, relaxation, laughter, and joint decisions on our path this year. One thing that’s clear—it’s a team effort… in this regard: Design. Innovation. Together. Here are a few impressions:
